The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Daniel Joseph Landry (MCSN: 2098154), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with the First Platoon, Company C, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 25 February 1967, Corporal Landry’s platoon was inserted by helicopter deep into hostile territory on a reconnaissance mission. Immediately upon landing in a heavily booby trapped and mined area, the patrol was brought under intense enemy small arms and .509 caliber machine gun fire. During the engagement, a 250 pound bomb rigged as a mine exploded, instantly killing the platoon sergeant and wounding ten other men, including Corporal Landry. Disregarding his own painful wounds and courageously exposing himself to the hostile fire, he unhesitatingly rushed to the assistance of the platoon Corpsman who had received multiple fragment wounds and a serious head wound. Observing that the man had stopped breathing, Corporal Landry immediately performed artificial respiration and skillfully utilized digital pressure and bandages to stop the bleeding. Undaunted by the continuous hostile fire, Corporal Landry fearlessly continued to administer first aid for thirty minutes until a doctor arrived, and as a result of his determination and uncommon courage, saved the life of his comrade. By his heroic actions, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Landry inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
