The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Alfred F. Landreth, Jr. (MCSN: 2529967), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company E, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 September 1970, while occupying a strategic observation post along a vital supply line in Quang Nam Province, Lance Corporal Landreth heard a loud explosion from the area of an adjoining observation post one hundred fifty meters distant. Quickly moving to a point where he could see the position clearly, he observed that the two men occupying the position were under a vicious ground attack from a North Vietnamese Army unit and that one of the Marines was wounded. Realizing that unless aid reached the Marines soon, the observation post would rapidly be overrun by the numerically superior hostile force, Lance Corporal Landreth, with seeming disregard for his own safety, rushed across the intervening space to aid his companions. Although his actions attracted the attention of the attacking soldiers and resulted in a concentrated effort by them to stop him, he valiantly charged directly into their fire yelling and firing at them. The momentum and vigor of his attack so surprised the enemy that their attack faltered and then they broke contact and retreated. By his bold initiative, courage, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Lance Corporal Landreth saved the life of a fellow Marine, prevented interdiction of the important highway, and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
