The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph John Kosoglow (MCSN: 2074108), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Sniper with Company C, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Shortly after midnight on 16 June 1966, Private First Class Kosoglow’s eighteen man patrol was occupying an observation post deep within enemy controlled territory in the vicinity of Chi Tu, Quang Tin Province, when a Viet Cong force of estimated battalion strength crept close to the Marines’ position and, on a pre-determined signal, launched a vicious attack with small arms, grenades, automatic weapons and mortar fire. In the course of the relentless enemy attack, Private First Class Kosoglow exhibited exceptional courage and presence of mind when he saw a hand grenade fall next to his wounded platoon leader, who was engaged in directing close air support on the platoon’s only radio. Without hesitation or regard for his own safety, Private First Class Kosoglow leaped toward the grenade and kicked it away before it exploded. His unselfish act not only saved the life of his comrade, but also preserved the unit’s only means of communications. Although he was painfully wounded by the murderous enemy fire, he courageously and successfully defended an entire sector of the defensive perimeter. His determined effort throughout the encounter were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed in large measure to the successful defense of the hill. Private First Class Kosoglow’s exceptional composure in the face of danger, daring initiative and unswerving dedication to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
