The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Terry W. Knight (MCSN: 2353535), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company E, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 11 April 1969, Corporal Knight’s platoon was conducting a search and destroy operation near Fire Support Base NEVILLE when the Marines discovered an enemy cave complex. As the platoon was assaulting the hostile position, Corporal Knight alertly observed several of the enemy occupying the high ground to the left flank of the friendly unit, and rapidly deploying his squad, he directed his men in delivering a heavy volume of fire upon the hostile soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, he quickly launched an assault against the enemy emplacements and, ignoring the hostile sniper rounds impacting near him, delivered covering fire for his men as he directed them into the enemy complex. Observing a seriously wounded Marine, he commenced maneuvering across the fire-swept terrain to assist his comrade, but was pinned down by the intense hostile fire. Delivering accurate return fire, he resolutely continued to advance, and after moving the injured man to a position of relative safety, he boldly assisted a second casualty. When the enemy force had been defeated, Corporal Knight skillfully aided his platoon commander in supervising the evacuation of the casualties and in reorganizing his platoon. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, aggressive leadership and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Knight upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
