The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Robert J. Kline (MCSN: 2288879), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Anti-tank Assault Man with Company L, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF. On the afternoon of 10 April 1968, during Operation JASPER SQUARE, Corporal Kline’s platoon was pinned down by a heavy volume of enemy fire while advancing through the village of Le Nam. Grievously wounded by the initial burst of fire, two Marines fell in an area dangerously exposed to the intense hostile fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Kline, armed with only a pistol, fearlessly maneuvered to the side of one of the casualties. Ignoring the enemy fire impacting around him, he picked up the wounded man and carried him to a covered position. Courageously returning to the hazardous area, he began maneuvering toward the second man and was mortally wounded by the enemy fire. His bold initiative and sincere concern for his comrades inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Marine. By his courage, resolute determination, and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Kline upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
