The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Robert J. Klages (MCSN: 0-94840), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company B, Third Amphibian Tractor Battalion, attached to the First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam on 1 August 1967. During Operation PIKE, First Lieutenant Klages was leading three amphibian tractors in support of infantry south of DaNang. The infantry units became heavily engaged by the enemy utilizing small arms, automatic weapons, rockets and mortars, approximately 100 meters from First Lieutenant Klages’ front. As the battle progressed, a gap developed between two infantry companies and exposed their flanks, plus that of another amphibian tractor platoon, to the intensive enemy fire. Without hesitation, First Lieutenant Klages brought his tractors forward to close the gap. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he remained exposed to direct his unit’s fire and movement and gallantly led his platoon to within hand grenade range amid the devastating fire. As enemy grenades commenced to fall around his tractor, First Lieutenant Klages, after being assured that the gap was closed, finally sought cover but was mortally wounded attempting to reach a protective barrier. By his inspiring leadership, gallant fighting spirit and devotion to fulfillment of a vital task, First Lieutenant Klages was materially responsible for the successful accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
