The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harry L. Kaus, Jr. (MCSN: 2077042), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, during Operation STARLITE near Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 August 1965. While engaged in an attack against well-entrenched insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces, Private First Class Kaus’ platoon came under such intense and accurate enemy small arms, recoilless rifle and rocket fire that movement in any direction without serious casualties was impossible. Quickly recognizing the gravity of the situation, he and a fellow Marine, acting without command, rushed from their protected positions and fearlessly assaulted the enemy. Completely disregarding the danger, Private First Class Kaus continued in his attack, destroying the crew of a rocket launcher and several of the enemy in the area before he fell to the ground mortally wounded. By his courageous actions and loyal devotion to duty Private First Class Kaus inspired his platoon to destroy the remaining enemy, reflected great credit upon the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
