The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain John Frederick Juul (MCSN: 0-90402), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer, Company D, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. In the early morning hours of 8 May 1967, while positioned in a defensive perimeter in the vicinity of Con Thien Mountain in Quang Tri Province, Company D came under a heavy mortar attack, immediately followed by a fanatical assault by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. The enemy broke through the company lines with overwhelming small arms and automatic weapons fire, satchel charges and flame throwers. Almost immediately Captain Juul was severely wounded in the leg. Undaunted by the perilous situation, he directed two Marines to hold him in a sitting position while he requested reports on the extent of enemy penetration from elements of his company. Subsequently, having made an estimate of the situation, he directed the two Marines to hold him in a standing position, and with complete disregard for his own safety, skillfully coordinated a counter attack on the North Vietnamese force. As a result of his superb leadership and tactic al ability, the enemy was repulsed, resulting in one hundred and eleven enemy killed. Only after the company was reinforced, and at the order of the Battalion Commander did he allow himself to be evacuated. By his exceptional professional skill, bold initiative and courageous actions, Captain Juul upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
