The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Larry G. Jones (MCSN: 1940762), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Guide with Company I, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 6 July 1968, Company I was embarking aboard a convoy during the heavy volume of North Vietnamese artillery fire. During the ensuing attack, numerous Marines fell seriously wounded in positions dangerously exposed to the intense hostile fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Jones immediately commenced directing the treatment and evacuation of the casualties. As he fearlessly maneuvered about the fire-swept terrain assisting his injured comrades, an enemy round impacted near him, violently knocking him to the ground and piercing his protective vest with fragments. Undaunted by the severe explosive shock, he quickly recovered and, alertly observing a nearby jeep, assisted several wounded Marines to the vehicle. On two occasions, he unhesitatingly maneuvered the jeep through the intense hostile fire to the relative safety of a helicopter landing zone from which the casualties were medically evacuated. Disregarding his own safety, he was resolutely returning to the hazardous area to render further assistance, when a nearby truck was suddenly struck by an enemy artillery round. Reacting instantly, Sergeant Jones immediately rushed to the burning vehicle, and, after extracting two injured men, moved them to a covered position. Continuing his determined efforts, he steadfastly remained in the fire-swept area while directing his men in boarding the vehicles, until every Marine was embarked and the convoy was able to leave the hazardous position. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of numerous Marines. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Sergeant Jones contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
