The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel Jasinski (MCSN: 1914115), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Counterintelligence Assistant with Detachment A, Fifteenth Counterintelligence Team, THIRD Marine Division in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 2 February 1968, the Cam Lo District Headquarters came under heavy mortar, rocket, recoilless rifle and automatic weapons fire followed by a ground attack by a reinforced North Vietnamese Army regiment. When the attack commenced, Sergeant Jasinski unhesitatingly moved through the fire-swept area to his 60-mm. mortar position. Suddenly several enemy mortar rounds impacted in the emplacement wounding him, destroying the mortar base plate, sight and tripod and detonating mortar rounds in the pit. Disregarding his own safety, he moved into the burning mortar position, salvaged the undamaged mortar tube and mortar rounds and established a firing position in an open area. Although he had to pull the tube out of the ground after every round, he resolutely delivered approximately 200 mortar rounds against the assaulting North Vietnamese force. When his ammunition was expended, he moved to the command bunker where he assisted in reestablishing communications and treating the wounded. He then returned to the perimeter and repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire to obtain and distribute ammunition to Marines in his area and assist the casualties. As a result of his prompt and fearless actions during the five hour battle, the small number of defenders repulsed the numerically superior enemy force, killing 144 North Vietnamese, capturing thirty-eight enemy soldiers and seizing numerous individual and crew-served weapons. By his courage, bold initiative and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Jasinski inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
