The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bernard K. Jarboe (MCSN: 1952880), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During a search and destroy operation near the hamlet of Thach An Noi on 21 March 1966, Private First Class Jarboe’s Company was subjected to extremely heavy and accurate fire from a large Viet Cong force entrenched to the front and left flank. Reacting instantly when his squad leader was wounded and disabled, Private First Class Jarboe took command of the squad. Fearlessly moving from position to position shouting instructions and directing fire, he aggressively led his squad into the village to assist Marines who had become pinned down by withering fire. Noticing three men from another unit who were wounded and helpless in an open area, Private First Class Jarboe courageously crossed thirty meters of terrain swept by automatic weapons fire and, one by one, dragged the casualties to a safe area. His heroic action undoubtedly saved the men from death or further wounds. By his extraordinary concern for his comrades at great risk to his own life, coupled with bold initiative and unfaltering dedication to duty throughout, Private First Class Jarboe upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
