The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Buddy Lee James (MCSN: 1579538), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a squad Leader with Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 20 July 1966, during Operation HASTINGS, Sergeant James’ unit was engaged in a patrol to search a proposed helicopter landing zone area when intense automatic weapons and mortar fire was received from a large North Vietnamese force. Reacting swiftly and professionally, Sergeant James skillfully deployed his men and directed effective fire on the enemy. Without regard for his own safety, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the withering fire to assist and encourage his men. During his valiant efforts, his M-79 grenade launcher was shot from his hands. Although suffering greatly from fragmentation wounds, he courageously remained in command of his unit, resolutely directing their return fire and helping to evacuate the wounded. Only when he was assured that all others in need had been cared for did he submit to medical treatment of his own wounds. His bold initiative and determination throughout the firefight was a source of inspiration and motivation for all who observed him, and contributed in large measure to the eventual defeat of the North Vietnamese attackers. By his outstanding valor in the face of hostile fire, perseverance despite his great suffering and unswerving devotion to duty, Sergeant James upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
