The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant James Julian Roberson (MCSN: 0-97738), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Platoon Commander of the Third Platoon, First Armored Amphibian Company, Eleventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 12 June 1967, Second Lieutenant Roberson’s platoon, located at the mouth of the Cua Viet River, came under intense 140 mm rocket, 100 mm artillery and 82 mm mortar fire. During the attack, his position received a direct hit from an enemy artillery round, inflicting painful wounds to Second Lieutenant Roberson’s face and body. With resolute determination and exceptional courage despite his injuries, he directed counter battery fire at the Viet Cong and then directed his efforts toward his wounded companions. Immediately providing first aid to his platoon sergeant, who had received an abdominal wound, and to his platoon gunnery sergeant, who had received a traumatic amputation of the foot, Second Lieutenant Roberson undoubtedly saved both Marines’ lives. Subsequently, displaying calm courage and outstanding presence of mind, he continued to move among his men, encouraging them while controlling and directing their fire. Completely disregarding his own well-being, he refused medical aid until he was assured that the enemy attack had subsided and the situation was under control. His aggressive fighting spirit and heroic actions were inspiring to all who served with him and contributed significantly to the repulse of the enemy attack. By his exemplary leadership, exceptional initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Roberson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
