The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Curtis R. Jackson (MCSN: 2010458), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a member of a reinforced rifle squad of Company G, Second Battalion, Third Marines on 4 June 1965. While in defense of a bridge near Le My, Republic of Vietnam, Lance Corporal Jackson courageously and fearlessly defended his position against the Viet Cong. When attacked by some 50 to 60 of the enemy, who were using machine guns and mortars, he held his position and returned accurate fire. Although sustaining wounds in each leg, Lance Corporal Jackson continued to fire, until both his rifle and pistol became inoperative. Then, acquiring another rifle, Lance Corporal Jackson continued to defend his position until the enemy retreated. Thus having killed our wounded at least three of the enemy, Lance Corporal Jackson was a major factor in the successful defense of the squad’s position and was an inspiration to those with him. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk, Lance Corporal Jackson upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
