The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Linwood J. Inman (MCSN: 2147102), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company A, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy near Cam Lo, Republic of Vietnam, on 26 August 1966. In the early morning hours, Lance Corporal Inman was located at a forward tank and artillery position which was attacked by a numerically superior force of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Regulars. He immediately positioned his men to withstand a fierce enemy assault and then joined his Platoon Commander and another Marine in a fighting position. As the fighting became more intense, a satchel charge was thrown into their position. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Inman seized the satchel charge and threw it back at the enemy. The charge exploded just as it left his hand, and he sustained serious head injuries. His selfless actions unquestionably saved the lives of the two Marines and served as an example for all who observed him. By his courage, initiative, and inspiring devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Inman upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
