The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] James Harvey Huskey (MCSN: 2363681), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 4 to 6 April 1968. During this period, Sergeant Huskey participated in a successful three-company effort to capture Hill 471, a key terrain feature overlooking an important highway near the Khe Sanh Combat Base. While walking as point man for a squad whose mission was to dislocate and destroy enemy elements entrenched along a narrow ridge line, Sergeant Huskey was wounded by heavy enemy fire from the front and both flanks. Although severely wounded in both legs, he stood up in full view of the enemy and accurately fired into the enemy trenches. By drawing the enemy’s fire to himself, his squad was able to regroup and assault the left flank and trenches ahead. Sergeant Huskey continued his intensive fire, knocking out the bunker to his right and killing several enemy soldiers. By his daring actions, bold courage and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Sergeant Huskey inspired all who observed him and contributed in large measure to securing the important hill; thereby upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
