The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Edwin Lee Huff (MCSN: 0-76402), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Attack Squadron One Hundred Fifty-Five (VMA-155), embarked in U.S.S. CONSTELLATION (CVA-64), during a combat mission against North Vietnam on 12 September 1966. Captain Huff led a section of aircraft on a surface-to-air missile suppression mission in support of simultaneous air strikes against two large petroleum storage facilities near Haiphong. Although maneuvering in an extremely heavy flak environment he detected an enemy missile site from which a missile launch was imminent. Using special tactics developed by himself and his wingman, Captain Huff led his section in an attack which silenced the missile site. Almost immediately thereafter, another missile site threatened the strike group and again he led his section in another daring attack which silenced the second threat. Captain Huff then visually sighted a third site, occupied with radar and missiles and surrounded by a formidable array of protective anti-aircraft artillery. With great intrepidity and daring courage he led his section in two devastating Bullpup attacks which left the site in flames. During the last attack his wingman was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Captain Huff quickly joined with and escorted the damaged aircraft, which was trailing fuel and flame, to an expeditious rendezvous with a tanker aircraft and an eventual safe recovery aboard ship. By his daring actions, calmness under fire, and extraordinary skill he inflicted extremely heavy damage to the enemy. Captain Huff’s courageous and gallant performance insured the success of two simultaneous air strikes and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
