The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Leroy Charles Howe (MCSN: 2135524), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a Machine Gun Team Leader serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced) in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam on 13 May 1967. During a search and destroy operation against the enemy in connection with Operation Shawnee, the second platoon ran into a small enemy unit. The platoon immediately opened fire, wounding at least two enemy and forcing them to retreat. While in pursuit of the fleeing enemy, the platoon was suddenly ambushed by an estimated reinforced enemy squad in a well fortified position. During the initial burst the point man was seriously wounded. Seeing that the wounded Marine was separated from the platoon in an exposed position, Corporal Howe, with full knowledge of the hazards involved and with complete disregard for his own safety, exposing himself to heavy fire, moved forward to assist his fallen comrade and to reinforce the point. While advancing, he was knocked to the ground and wounded by an enemy hand grenade. Disregarding his painful wound, he arose and continued to advance toward the wounded Marine. When he was within a few yards of his objective, he was mortally wounded by the enemy. By his outstanding courage, indomitable fighting spirit and selfless efforts in behalf of others, Corporal Howe served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
