The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert Albert Horcajo (MCSN: 2425989), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company K, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 23 February 1969, Private First Class Horcajo’s platoon was maneuvering to relieve elements of Company M that were pinned down by a large hostile force in Quang Nam Province. As the Marines moved into a tree line, they were halted by intense sniper, small arms, and automatic weapons fire from a well-concealed enemy force. Observing a wounded Marine fall beyond the forward element of the friendly unit, Private First Class Horcajo unhesitatingly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to the side of his injured comrade and began administering first aid. When a Corpsman arrived, Private First Class Horcajo fearlessly moved to an even more exposed position from which he provided covering fire for the Corpsman and his patient. While engaged in this selfless task, Private First Class Horcajo was mortally wounded by hostile fire. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Horcajo upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
