The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Peter Mac Hesser (MCSN: 0-92873), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company G, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the afternoon of 6 February 1968, First Lieutenant Hesser’s unit was conducting operations south of DaNang in Quang Nam Province when it came under intense enemy fire from an estimated battalion-size force of North Vietnamese Regulars. Reacting instantly, he dispatched two tanks in support of his First Platoon and, skillfully maneuvering the remainder of his company, executed an assault against the flank of the enemy positions, simultaneously directing artillery and air strikes on the hostile emplacements. Displaying outstanding tactical skill and superior leadership, he effectively deployed his units over a 1,100 meter front, killing thirty of the enemy before darkness required him to consolidate his forces. Shortly after establishing a night defensive perimeter, he was informed of extensive enemy movement and, utilizing a sighting device, observed the remainder of the enemy unit passing approximately 300 meters from his position. Instructing his snipers to fire on the hostile force, he simultaneously directed effective artillery and mortar fire on the confused enemy, continuing his bold actions throughout the night. The following morning a search of the area disclosed that twenty-seven of the enemy had been killed as a result of skillful employment of supporting arms. His superior leadership inspired all who observed him and was instrumental in enabling his unit to account for over fifty North Vietnamese soldiers killed and the confiscation of numerous weapons and vital intelligence documents. By his dauntless courage, outstanding professionalism and unwavering devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Hesser upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
