The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Glen Richard Head (MCSN: 2052841), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Combat Engineer with First Platoon, Company B, Third Engineer Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam, during the period 24 July through 25 July 1966. As a member of an engineer demolitions team, Private First Class Head was lowered from a helicopter by a cable through heavy jungle canopy amid a deadly hail of North Vietnamese automatic weapons fire with the mission of clearing a helicopter landing zone for the medical evacuation of critically wounded Marines of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines. Severely handicapped by the absence of his fellow team members, who were unable to land because of the rising intensity of enemy fire, Private First Class Head proceeded to blast the jungle growth to create the helicopter landing site by emplacing and detonating most of the explosive charges himself, directing infantrymen in completing the rest. He voluntarily and bravely exposed himself repeatedly with complete disregard for his own personal safety in order to finish his mission. Once he was attacked by two North Vietnamese infiltrators whom he felled with immediate and accurate rifle fire, then worked on to complete his task in less than a day in spite of the fact that he was wounded as a result of the enemy encounter. By his uncommon personal bravery and his superb professional competence, Private First Class Head upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
