The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal James Richard Harrison (MCSN: 2349898), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 March 1969, Company G was preparing for an assault on a hostile stronghold in a mountainous section of northern Quang Tri Province, when the Marines came under a heavy volume of mortar, rocket-propelled grenade, and automatic weapons fire from a hostile force occupying well-concealed emplacements. Observing that some of his men lie wounded in positions dangerously exposed to the enemy fire, Corporal Harrison completely disregarded his own safety as he boldly moved between his injured companions and the hostile emplacements. Resolutely determined to prevent further serious injury or possible death to his men, he remained in the hazardous area and delivered accurate suppressive fire at the enemy soldiers until he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and enabled other Marines to evacuate the casualties. By his courage, sincere concern for his fellowmen and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Harrison contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
