The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Clyde Lullum Harrison (MCSN: 2366560), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader, First Platoon, Company C, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 25 August 1968, during Operation SCOTLAND II in the vicinity of Ca Lu, Company C came under intense enemy fire which temporarily pinned down the Platoon and killed one Marine. Unhesitatingly, Lance Corporal Harrison fearlessly attempted to retrieve the body, but was stopped by a heavy volume of enemy fire. Reorganizing his men for a second attempt, he was wounded, but continued to direct his men until they maneuvered to safe positions. As the squad was reestablishing its position, the enemy conducted an assault to the left flank which was stopped by Lance Corporal Harrison killing two enemy soldiers. With his men in safe positions, he carried a wounded Marine to safety and returned for a third attempt at taking the enemy position and recovering the fallen Marine. Silencing a machine gun position with a light anti-armored weapon, Lance Corporal Harrison pressed the attack to the enemy until his squad was ordered back so that an air strike could be conducted. Moving back to the Company’s line, he carried a second wounded Marine back to safety. By his courageous and daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of great personal risk, Lance Corporal Harrison reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
