The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Charles Edward Harris (MCSN: 2312798), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Scout with the First Force Reconnaissance Company, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced) in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 January 1968. Corporal Harris was a member of a ten man reconnaissance team moving toward an ambush site south of the Nam Hoe District Headquarters. The patrol was checking out a trail network which showed recent signs of enemy use when they were taken under devastating small-arms and automatic weapons fire from a well concealed enemy force. In the initial burst of enemy fire, the point man was seriously wounded. Quickly assessing the situation and with complete disregard for his won safety. Corporal Harris moved across the fire swept terrain toward his injured comrade. He placed a heavy volume of rifle fire and M-79 Grenade Launcher fire upon the enemy positions. Undaunted by the intense enemy fire, he continued toward his wounded companion until he was mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty Corporal Harris was instrumental in allowing his patrol to establish a base of fire thereby saving his fellow Marines from further injury or possible death. His great personal valor reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
