    The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Rocky W. Hanna (MCSN: 2486550), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Headquarters Company, Headquarters Battalion, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 11 January 1969, Private First Class Hanna was with the element of a small patrol that was moving to ambush positions near the village of Ta Kien in Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under a heavy volume of fire from a large enemy force. Although seriously wounded, Private First Class Hanna fearlessly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire and delivered an accurate volume of suppressive fire upon the enemy emplacements, killing four hostile soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, he resolutely continued his determined efforts, and after the enemy was forced to break contact, he succumbed to his wounds. His heroic actions and bold initiative inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow Marines. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty, Private First Class Hanna upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
