The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major John W. Guy (MCSN: 0-81309), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the Republic of Vietnam. On 25 February 1969, Major Guy was serving as Acting Senior Advisor to the 6th Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam at Tam Ky Airport, Quang Tin Province. At approximately 1230 hours Major Guy was coordinating operation OT-600 by radio contact with three ARVN Infantry battalions, a troop of United States armored personnel carriers, an airborne forward air controller and several gunships. He was in the process of clearing the area for an air strike when the airfield came under intense small arms fire from a North Vietnamese Army battalion. While continuing to maintain radio contact in an exposed position, Major Guy was wounded in the face by a bullet which lodged in his jaw. Despite extreme pain and temporary paralysis of his legs, he continued to operate his radio, realizing that the operation was at a critical point where proper coordination could mean the difference between a complete victory and the escape of the enemy, and that he was the only one thoroughly knowledgeable of the situation. As a result of Major Guy’s continued courageous and professional performance of duty after being severely wounded, 168 North Vietnamese were killed in action while only eight friendly soldiers were killed. Major Guy’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
