Under the provisions of Department of Defense 1348.33-M, the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America takes pleasure in awarding the Defense Superior Service Medal to Colonel John Southy Grinalds (MCSN: 0-77793), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally superior service as Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, from June 1982 to July 1985. Colonel Grinalds’ keen insight, dedication and extensive knowledge of the military cooperation tasks and needs among the European Command, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and France, directly contributed to an enhanced deterrence posture for the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance. He provided important contributions in the politically charged area of chemical warfare, ensuring that this subject was emphasized in national and alliance forum. He created new opportunities for the use of Marine forces in peacetime and wartime throughout Allied Command Europe. Colonel Grinalds’ dynamic leadership and ability to function at the highest levels made him a superbly effective special advisor to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. The distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Grinalds reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Marine Corps, and the Department of Defense.
