The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Michael B. Grimes (MCSN: 2242452), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Radioman with Company B, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 March 1967. While on Operation BEACON HILL I in the vicinity of Long Son Hamlet, Lance Corporal Grimes was accompanying a squad-sized patrol outside the Company perimeter. As the patrol moved out, it came under heavy automatic weapons fire at close range from a numerically superior enemy force. Several members of the patrol immediately became casualties and were lying in an open area exposed to the enemy fire. One of the Marines had fallen very close to an enemy position. Realizing that this Marine had to be moved from the very dangerous position, Lance Corporal Grimes unhesitatingly, and without regard for his own safety, rushed to aid the injured Marine. In spite of the concentration of enemy fire on him, he reached the wounded Marine and began moving him to safety, however, before he could reach a safe position he was mortally wounded by enemy sniper fire. Although fatally struck down while attempted to rescue the wounded man, Lance Corporal Grimes, by his bold initiative, heroic actions and grave concern for others, had risked his life to save that of a fellow Marine, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
