The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Matthew E. Greer (MCSN: 2142211), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company D, First Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 5 May 1968, Company D was occupying a defensive position east of Hue City, when the Marines came under a heavy enemy mortar, rocket and grenade attack and received intense automatic weapons and small arms fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Corporal Greer immediately moved from one position to another, fearlessly exposing himself to intense hostile fire as he encouraged his men and directed their fire. While delivering a heavy volume of grenade launcher fire which destroyed a rocket position and killed five enemy soldiers, he was critically wounded. Resolutely remaining in his exposed position, Corporal Greer shouted encouragement as he deployed his men to their secondary positions and provided covering fire to protect their movement, killing several more enemy soldiers before succumbing to his wounds. His courageous actions were instrumental in repulsing the North Vietnamese Army force and thwarted an attempt by the enemy to infiltrate his sector of the defensive perimeter. By his extraordinary courage, determined fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Greer inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
