The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gerald Greenberg (MCSN: 2105360), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 6 September 1967 during Operation SWIFT, Corporal Greenberg’s company came under heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire from an entrenched, reinforced North Vietnamese Army battalion. In the initial moments of the fire fight, he and every member of his team were wounded. Ignoring his painful wounds, Corporal Greenberg quickly took the machine gun and, firing from the hip, assaulted an enemy automatic weapons position. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly advanced in the face of intense fire and, firing his machine gun rapidly and accurately, destroyed the enemy position. Then, he courageously assaulted an adjacent mortar position and neutralized the enemy mortar fire. His exceptional fortitude and bold fighting spirit inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his extraordinary courage, steadfast determination and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Greenberg upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
