The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant William Francis Green (MCSN: 0-102882), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 29 June 1968, Company G was assigned to attack a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying a defensive position near Khe Mio in Quang Tri Province. While advancing with his unit toward the hostile emplacements, Second Lieutenant Green was suddenly wounded by an exploding enemy device. Steadfastly refusing medical evacuation, he was leading his platoon against the hostile force when the Marines suddenly came under intense mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire. Reacting instantly, Second Lieutenant Green immediately moved in front of his company commander to shield him from the hostile fire, and while directing accurate fire against the counterattacking enemy force, he was again seriously wounded. Ignoring his painful injuries, he skillfully deployed his men in an aggressive assault upon the hostile positions, shouting words of encouragement to his Marines and directing their fire until the North Vietnamese soldiers fled in panic and confusion. Seizing the objective, he resolutely continued his determined efforts by supervising and assisting in moving his casualties over 2,000 meters of hazardous terrain to an area where they could be medically evacuated. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who served with him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, aggressive leadership and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Second Lieutenant Green upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
