The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Andrew Don Gray (MCSN: 2352191), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Acting Platoon Sergeant with Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 7 May 1968 during Operations Allen Brook, one of the company’s platoons was leading a battalion-size search and clear operations through a village in Quang Nam Province when it came under heavy automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese Army force concealed in well fortified bunkers, inflicting several Marine casualties. Directed to deploy his men to protect the right flank of the pinned down platoon, Corporal Gray was moving his men into position when two of his squads came under intense enemy fire and were pinned down. Rapidly assessing the situation, he located the source of the hostile fire and completely disregarded his own safety as he crawled across the fire-swept area, threw hand grenades into the enemy bunker and destroyed the position. Returning to his platoon, he was coordinating and assisting in the evacuation of casualties when heavy fire from another North Vietnamese bunker again pinned his men down. Ignoring the intense fire, Corporal Gray crawled to the enemy emplacement and killed the occupants with rifle fire. Due largely to his initiative and fearless action, he accounted for four North Vietnamese soldiers killed, the capture of four automatic weapons and enabled both platoons to evacuate their casualties and accomplish their missions. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Gray upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
