The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Richard Michael Golub (MCSN: 2099586), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with First Armored Amphibian Tractor Company, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, attached to Company A, First Amphibian Tractor Battalion and participating in Operation HICKORY II in Gio Linh Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 14 July 1967. While conducting a sweep, the forward elements of Company A became hopelessly pinned down by enemy fire originating from a well-fortified ridge line. The enemy, utilizing automatic, small arms and 75-mm recoilless rifle fire, destroyed on armored amphibian vehicle and inflicted numerous casualties on the Marine unit. Sergeant Golub, serving as a Section Leader of the Armored Amphibian Vehicles, instantly grasped the tactical situation and directed his vehicle into the forward portion of the battlefield. Although exposed on his Armored Amphibian Vehicle, Sergeant Golub directed the fire of his 105-mm. howitzer and personally manned the .50 caliber machine gun. Although painfully wounded by an enemy round, Sergeant Golub maneuvered his vehicle in front and across Company A’s front lines and delivered his fire directly into the enemy positions. Repeatedly and skillfully moving his vehicle back and forth along the ridge line, Sergeant Golub continually exposed himself to the devastating enemy fire to direct his vehicle and finally suppress the enemy’s fire power. Sergeant Golub’s extreme gallantry and loyal devotion to duty were instrumental in allowing Company A to evacuate their casualties and gain the initiative in silencing the enemy’s position. By his unselfish concern for his own personal safety and courageous example, Sergeant Golub upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
