The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Leo P. Glover (MCSN: 0-88701), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Forward Air Controller attached to Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 July 1966. During Operation HASTINGS in Quang Tri Province, Company K was providing rear security for a Battalion march column when it came under heavy mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire from all sides from a North Vietnamese force of Regimental size. When the enemy cut off the first and third platoons and threatened to overrun their positions, First Lieutenant Glover, reacting quickly and alertly, immediately called for close air support. Unable to observe the air strikes from his stream bed locations, he courageously moved through the intensive fire to a position one hundred meters closer to the beleaguered platoons. Still unable to observe, he ran another fifty meters, completely exposing himself to the withering fire until he made contact with the first and third platoons. From this position he directed air strikes to within fifty meters of friendly locations and his own position, while throughout the battle, he repeatedly exposed himself to the deadly enemy fire and performed in an exceptionally heroic manner. After the five hour battle had subsided to sporadic sniper fire he personally carried several wounded Marines over two hundred meters to a relatively safe area, and immediately directed helicopter evacuations of over forty-five wounded Marines in darkness with the aid only of a flashlight. His outstanding leadership and daring actions were significant factors in repelling the enemy’s vicious attack and were instrumental in the destruction of more than two hundred confirmed killed. By his exceptional courage, professional competence and unfaltering dedication to duty throughout, First Lieutenant Glover upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
