The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Billy W. Glass (MCSN: 2509049), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radio Operator with Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 April 1970, while a squad from Company C was participating in a search and clear operation southwest of DaNang in Quang Nam Province, the Marines observed a North Vietnamese Army soldier dart into a cave to avoid capture. Aware of the importance of obtaining intelligence information from the man, two of the Marines and a Vietnamese interpreter followed the soldier into the cave and attempted to secure his surrender but, determined to escape, the man opened fire. Realizing the dangerous situation existing within the close confines of the cave, Lance Corporal Glass, who had alertly located an alternate entrance to the cave, removed his radio and, rushing through the entrance, fired at the hostile soldier and severely wounded him. Although mortally wounded himself when the enemy returned his fire, Lance Corporal Glass diverted the attention of the hostile soldier sufficiently to enable his companions to withdraw to safety. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and saved the lives of two Marines as well as that of a Republic of Vietnam soldier. By his courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to his fellowmen, Lance Corporal Glass upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
