The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Second Lieutenant Jeffrey Allen Gaugush (MCSN: 0-91920), United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving as Platoon Leader with Company K, third Battalion, Ninth Marines. During a search and destroy operation south of An Hoa, on 4 July 1966, the Company which Second Lieutenant Gaugush was serving was subjected to vicious fire from a numerically superior Viet Cong force. Reacting swiftly, Second Lieutenant Gaugush immediately deployed his platoon in an effective manner which provided maximum fire support and helped halt enemy activity in the forward sector of the Company perimeter. Without regard for his own safety, he continuously exposed himself to the withering fire to control the employment of his men and weapons. On two occasions when squads became pinned down in the savage action, he fearlessly exposed himself to fire an M-79 grenade launcher on the Viet Cong positions, enabling the Marines to change positions and gain fire superiority. Exhibiting fortitude and composure, Second Lieutenant Gaugush braved the hostile fire to point out camouflaged Viet Cong positions. His resolute effort throughout the engagement helped to provide effective supporting fire when it was most needed, and greatly strengthened the fighting spirit of his men. Second Lieutenant Gaugush’s exceptional professional skill, daring initiative and selfless dedication to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (The Combat “V” is authorized.”
