The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Rickey D. Garner (MCSN: 2139942), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Runner in the Second Platoon, Company L, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam on 5 March 1966. While engaged in combat with the enemy during Operation UTAH, the company was taken under heavy fire on Hill 62 and prevented from further movement. Private First Class Garner and four other men advanced into the North Vietnamese positions but when about halfway through the positions, two of the three leading men were severely wounded; one of them fatally. During this time, Private First Class Garner was fiercely attacking the enemy in their dugouts. Observing a group of five North Vietnamese soldiers in a trench about 20 yards from where he stood, he charged the trench, firing his automatic as he ran. As a result of his daring conduct he succeeded in destroying the enemy positions, but sustained wounds which resulted in his death. Private First Class Garner’s courageous actions on Hill 62 accounted for a number of enemy casualties and contributed materially to his company’s success in securing the position. His daring initiative, valiant fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
