The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Herman Galindo (MCSN: 2222759), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 April 1968, Corporal Galindo’s platoon was dispatched by tank to a bridge site between Ca Lu and Khe Sanh to assist a security force and a convoy which were pinned down by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force employing mortars, rockets, small arms and automatic weapons. Upon arrival at the site, his unit immediately came under heavy fire from well fortified positions along both sides of the Quang Tri River. Despite the hostile fire, Corporal Galindo unhesitatingly led his men forward to assist the pinned-down Marines and evacuate casualties from the bridge area. On one occasion, he crawled across the fire-swept terrain, placed a wounded Marine across his shoulders and carried him to a relatively safe area. Subsequently, he again exposed himself to enemy fire as he moved to a group of pinned-down Marines and established a base of fire, enabling the Marines to recover their wounded companions and maneuver to more advantageous positions. Although painfully wounded in the arm and leg, Corporal Galindo remained in his exposed position and provided covering fire until he was assured that the Marines had reached safety. His heroic actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Galindo was instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
