The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ronald Richard Frasier (MCSN: 2385302), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 3 February 1968, Company F was attacking North Vietnamese Army forces occupying the city of Hue. As the unit maneuvered forward, the Marines began receiving a heavy volume of small arms, automatic weapons and rocket fire from an enemy unit entrenched in the Treasury Building. From his position on the second floor of a nearby building, Private First Class Frasier fearlessly stood in an open window and skillfully delivered a heavy volume of machine gun fire upon the hostile emplacements. Suddenly, an enemy rocket round hit the wall near the window, knocking him unconscious several minutes later and steadfastly refusing medical treatment, he returned to his dangerous position and continued to direct accurate suppressive fire upon the enemy positions throughout the night. The following day, Company F was assigned to seize the Treasure Building, and the lead elements succeeded in entering the enemy-occupied structure. As he fearlessly ran across the fire-swept area toward the building, Private First Class Frasier alertly observed the Marines inside the building receiving a heavy volume of hand grenades. Disregarding his own safety, he ran forward to assist his comrades and, as he entered the structure, was wounded by fragments from an exploding enemy grenade. Ignoring his painful injuries and the intense hostile fire impacting around him, he delivered intense machine gun fire upon the enemy, killing three North Vietnamese Army soldiers and forcing the others to flee in panic and confusion. His heroic actions and aggressive fighting spirit were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, exceptional professionalism and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Private First Class Frasier upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
