The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Donald Floyd (MCSN: 2269120), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company A, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 February 1968, Corporal Floyd’s unit was conducting a search and destroy mission in the city of Hue when the Marines suddenly came under a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese Army force. In the initial burst of fire, the squad’s grenadier was seriously wounded. Seizing the injured man’s M-79 Grenade Launcher and ammunition, Corporal Floyd unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense fire and began maneuvering his squad toward the enemy emplacements. Skillfully directing suppressive fire and shouting words of encouragement as he advanced, he boldly led his men in a determined attack across the fire-swept terrain. When the assault began to lose momentum due to the intense hostile fire, he fearlessly moved into the open and delivered accurate grenade launcher fire upon the enemy positions, allowing his squad to advance toward its objective. On 11 February, two of his men were pinned down in an open area by enemy sniper fire. Although seriously wounded in both legs, Corporal Floyd immediately maneuvered to an advantageous firing position and delivered accurate grenade launcher fire upon the sniper’s position. Although weakened from loss of blood, he resolutely remained in his precarious position, directing his squad and delivering suppressive fire until he was medically evacuated. His aggressive fighting spirit and determined efforts in the face of great personal danger were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed materially to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, inspiring leadership and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Floyd upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
