The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Jeffrey McManamy Fisher (MCSN: 0-93917), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Executive Officer of Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 21 September 1967, while crossing a large open field to relieve two beleaguered Marine companies near Con Thien, Company G came under intense enemy automatic weapons and mortar fire from a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force which temporarily pinned down the company and inflicted numerous casualties. Alertly observing the location of two enemy machine gun positions, First Lieutenant Fisher completely disregarded his own safety and maneuvered forward through the heavy volume of hostile fire to within a few feet of the fortified emplacement. He then fearlessly stood up and threw grenades into the position until the defenders were killed and the machine gun was silenced. Continuing to expose himself to the hostile fire, he moved down the line to the next enemy machine gun and, after directing covering fire from his unit, courageously advanced to the edge of the enemy position and destroyed it with grenades. When Company G was directed to withdraw to protected positions, First Lieutenant Fisher quickly organized a small group of men to accompany him back into the fire-swept area to recover casualties who were lying in an area dangerously exposed to the enemy fire and during the next hour, assisted in moving the wounded to a place of relative safety. His heroic efforts and aggressive fighting spirit were an inspiration to all who served with him and undoubtedly saved the lives of numerous Marines. By his steadfast courage, bold initiative and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, First Lieutenant Fisher upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
