The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Erik C. Eriksen (MCSN: 2386023), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Forward Air Controller with Company E, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 September 1968, during a search and destroy operation northwest of the Rockpile in Quang Tri Province, Company E came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from a unit concealed in fortified bunkers. In the initial volley of fire, two Marines were seriously wounded as they moved along an exposed ridgeline. When repeated attempts to recover one of the casualties were thwarted by concentrated enemy fire, Sergeant Eriksen directed an observation aircraft over the area and, accompanied by another Marine, maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to the wounded man and carried him back to friendly lines. Although slightly wounded, he disregarded his own safety and again moved back into the line of enemy fire to place air panels and mark friendly and hostile positions for fixed-wing air strikes. When the friendly aircraft arrived on station, he remained in a most forward position and directed the attack until the enemy fortifications were destroyed and his unit was able to secure the area. His prompt and heroic actions undoubtedly saved the life of a fellow Marine, prevented additional casualties, and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant Eriksen upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
