The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roger L. Elkins (MCSN: 2387144), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 February 1969, Private First Class Elkins was on a platoon-sized patrol twenty-five miles southeast of the Vandegrift Combat Base when the Marines came under intense fire from a well-concealed hostile force. Reacting instantly, Private First Class Elkins rapidly assessed the situation and quickly informed his squad leader as to the disposition of the enemy. Requesting permission to deploy his fire team to neutralize the hostile position, he was fearlessly maneuvering his men toward their objective when he was seriously wounded by enemy fire. Steadfastly ignoring his painful injuries, he continued to direct his men in their aggressive efforts until he was mortally wounded by hostile fire. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold leadership and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Elkins upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
