The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Michael S. Hainline, United States Marine Corps, for heroism on 19 September 1989 while serving with 1st Battalion, Fifth Marines. Corporal Hainline was on terminal leave working at a manufacturing plant in Illinois when a disgruntled employee opened fire on a co-worker. Corporal Hainline and sever others moved quickly toward the sound of the gunfire, and found the assailant in the process of reloading his weapon. Corporal Hainline tackled the assailant to the ground and wrestled the weapon away from him, effectively ending the murderous rampage. While others kept watch over the assailant, Corporal Hainline shifted his focus to rendering first aid to a bleeding co-worker. The assailant then brandished a knife and escaped the facility. Corporal Hainline followed the assailant to the parking lot, and the description of the person and the getaway vehicle he gave to police helped them capture the gunman later that day. Corporal Hainline’s bold actions, initiative, and complete devotion to duty reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
