The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class Robert Gullo, United States Navy, for heroic conduct as a Member of the Crew of Motor Torpedo Boat 555 (PT-555), attached to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron TWENTY-NINE (MTB-29), in operations against the enemy at Port de Bouc during the amphibious invasion of Southern France on 24 August 1944. When the PT-555 struck a mine in the dangerous and un-swept waters of the French Harbor, blowing off the stern and throwing five members of the crew into the water, Seaman First Class Gullo unhesitatingly dived into the mine-infested waters in an effort to save his shipmates. Swimming to the aid of one of the survivors who was unconscious and mortally wounded, he supported him in the water until a life raft arrived, and assisted in returning the raft to the boat despite a strong wind and choppy sea which threatened to sweep the raft onto a heavily mined beach. His cool courage and decisive action reflect the highest credit upon Seaman First Class Gullo and the United States Naval Service
