The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Hospital Corpsman Second Class James Francis Gollogly, United States Navy, for heroism while serving as a Corpsman with Company B, Third Shore Party Battalion, THIRD Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 April 1969, a CH-53 helicopter crashed on a landing zone at the Vendegrift Combat Base and caused several fires which ignited various types of ammunition stacked in the landing zone. Petty Officer Gollogly unhesitatingly rushed across the landing zone, ignoring the exploding ordnance as he moved toward the burning helicopter. He assisted the casualties through the flaming wreckage to a relatively safe area, administered first aid treatment and then dispatched the wounded Marines by jeep to a medical facility. Returning to the hazardous area to search for more injured men, he treated seven other Marines who had sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of the crew members of the burning aircraft. Petty Officer Gollogly’s courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
