The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Air Medal to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Herbert Tucker Leake, United States Navy, for meritorious achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Torpedo Bomber attached to Composite Squadron THIRTY-EIGHT (VC-38), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area, during the periods September 13 to 18, October 17 to December 16, 1943, and January 23 to February 20, 1944. Participating in numerous daring missions over enemy-controlled territory, Lieutenant, Junior Grade Leake struck repeatedly at Japanese airfields, supply installations and troop concentrations despite intense antiaircraft fire and heavy fighter opposition, inflicting severe and costly damage on the enemy. A brilliant and intrepid airman, Lieutenant, Junior Grade Leake rendered invaluable assistance in the complete neutralization of the vital Vila, Kara, Kahili, Ballale, Buka and Bonis Airfields and, by his superb tactics and cool courage, contributed immeasurably to the outstanding success of his squadron throughout a critical period of war in the Pacific. His resolute determination and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
