The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit, in the Degree of Legionnaire (Navy Award) to Lieutenant Commander Clarence A. King, Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States during World War II. As Commanding Officer of a Canadian warship on convoy operations in the Atlantic, he succeeded in sinking a German submarine with gunfire and depth charges, and in capturing the commanding officer and five men of the U-boat. Although his own ship was badly damaged in the engagement, Lieutenant Commander King brought her safely to port.
