The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Vincent Dunn (MCSN: 1924381), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, in connection with operations against North Vietnamese Regulars in the Republic of Vietnam, on 15 July 1966. During Operation HASTINGS, Corporal Dunn’s Platoon came under intense enemy fire. With two fellow Marines, he became pinned down in a stream bed. In the firefight that ensued, the three Marines were warned of an incoming grenade by a comrade across the river. With complete disregard for his own safety, Corporal Dunn fearlessly exposed himself to heavy rifle and automatic weapons fire and kicked the grenade into the river where it exploded harmlessly. This courageous and daring act undoubtedly saved the lives of all three Marines. As the fire fight continued, Corporal Dunn received a painful leg wound, but resisted evacuation and insisted on remaining with his squad throughout the night. Putting other wounded members of his platoon on the medical evacuation helicopter, he did not receive treatment until the following morning. By his initiative, courage and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Dunn upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
