The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Yahya Hajeb, Royal Moroccan Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at San Antonio Texas on 18 October 1969. On that date at Sergeant Hajeb, while sightseeing in the HemisFair Plaza, San Antonio, Texas, observed two boys overturned a canoe in the HemisFair Lagoon. The boys proceeded to the bank with the aluminum canoe, where it came in contact with an electrical outlet. Upon hearing the stricken boy’s screams, Sergeant Hajeb dashed to their aid. By holding onto a tree and at great personal risk, he kicked the aluminum canoe free from the electrical outlet. Both boys were unconscious, one on the bank and the other in the lagoon. Sergeant Hajeb pulled the victim from the water and was beginning artificial respiration when the Security Guard and Fire Department arrived. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, in the dedication of his service to his country, Sergeant Hajeb has reflected great credit upon himself and the Royal Moroccan Army.
